The Australian Parade magazine featured a mixture of historical stories
from Australasia with topical contemporary stories set locally and from
around the world. Interior pages are black and white and issues during
the sixties and seventies featured vibrant painted covers. Australian
cartoonists Stan Pitt, John L Curtis, Virgil Reilly contributed covers during this period.

ReplyDeleteWe 2 teenage vagrants crept blindly up creaking stairs in the deserted house. (corner of Darlinghurst Road and Burton Street . Darlinghurst .NSW. Australia 1965 or '66).The house was labelled " soon to be demolished " On the top level he lit a candle and I saw the floor was covered by Parade magazines.
ReplyDeleteHe said ,"We gotta save the candle," and blew it out but a streetlight shone through the window.
There was a single mattress and we stretched out on it. We lay in silence and slept.
I awoke bathed by morning sun coming in the window and explored magazines scattered on the floor. They were about 200 copies of Parade, a popular monthly featuring only Australian history--so cheap not even second hand bookshops would buy them. I was delighted to have this a nice place to live.
